How to Care for Your Newly Coloured Hair

Updated: Nov 25, 2023

Can you tell I'm hair obsessed? This isn't even half of what I have...

You've made an investment in your hair, so now you have to take proper care of it! After you bleach the hair, it is normal for it to feel dry and for your texture to change. Please stay away from drugstore shampoos, (IE: Pantene, Head & Shoulders, Organix, Tresemme, Herbal Essences etc.) These shampoos contain unhealthy ingredients such as sulfates, salt and silicones. Silicones are what make you feel easy, breezy, beautiful with shiny hair, BUT over time they act as plastic coats that cause build up, making your hair look greasy and

lifeless. Sulfates cleanse your strands, but too much rips off your hair’s natural oils and dry it out. Some of their harsh ingredients (sulfates and salt) take a toll on your poor strands, making it hard to receive coloring and volume after a period of time.

For ALL Hair Colours

1. Sulfate-free colour-safe shampoo and conditioner for day-to-day use ○ Recommendations (Pick one line based on your preference and availability): Matrix Color Obsessed, Redken Acidic Concentrate Bonding Shampoo 2. Deep conditioning hair mask for weekly use Recommendations (Pick one): Olaplex, Redken Acidic Bonding Concentrate 3. Leave-In Conditioner for detangling and heat protection ○ Recommendation (Pick one): Revlon Equave Hydro Detangling Conditioner, Joico Defy Damage Protective Shield, Redken Acidic Bonding Concentrate Leave-In 4. Wet Brush to gently detangle and style hair ○ Also available at Wal-Mart, Winners, and Amazon

  • Has softer bristles that do not pull out as much hair. It is a must for delicate, processed hair.

5. Wash with warm/cool water as hot water fades colour faster. Wait at least 2 days after colouring to shampoo hair. 6. Avoid flat ironing hair, especially in the first two days as doing so can burn off colour. Limit heat styling where possible and use thermal protection sprays.

7. Sleep on a silk/satin pillowcase to limit friction on the hair and avoid tangles/further breakage

For Blondes

Purple Shampoo - Do Not overuse as it can be drying. Use once every other week or more if desired. Follow up with hair mask. ○ *Fanola No Yellow Shampoo* (Strongest and best one on the market, can leave purple tint if left on too long) Matrix Color Obsessed So Silver Joico Color Balance Purple Shampoo

For Light Brunettes (Ash Brown, Brondes, Mushroom Browns, etc.)

Blue Shampoo - Less commonly used than purple, blue cancels out orange tones. This is recommended more for maintaining light ashy browns or dark blondes as opposed to silver/platinum hair. Fanola No Orange Shampoo

Matrix Brass Off Shampoo (my personal favourite that I personally use. It's more of a blue/violet that I feel is more universal to people that have a mix of tones in their hair, not just all light blonde)

For Dark Brunettes

Green Shampoo – Even less commonly used, green cancels out red tones. This is for maintaining dark brown tones that go red over time.

For Bright Vivid (Fashion) Hair

1. Matrix Keep Me Vivid Shampoo and Conditioner 2. Matrix Keep Me Vivid Color Lamination (Use after shampoo and before conditioner, helps to prevent colour bleed out) This line from Matrix will reduce the fade-out of bright fashion colours. Even when using professional products and doing everything right, bright vivid hair is the hardest to maintain, especially on dry, porous hair. This line of products has been the most effective for me.
